Healthy Holiday Eating
Its holiday season again and you are surrounded by treats galore. How on earth are you going to avoid delicious appetizers, chips and dip, cake, pie and all the other delights. Well, maybe you don't have to avoid them completely. Here are some easy-to-follow eating and cooking tips for you to abide by this year.
Remember that you don't have to cut out all the tasty treats from your diet that are circulating at this time of the year - it's just a matter of "everything in moderation."
- Make open-top mince pies. Using less pastry cuts down on calories and fat or try use filo pastry. This is thinner and lower in calories than traditional pastry.
- Don’t wrap sausages in bacon or pastry. Grill, dry fry or bake them on a wire rack so that the fat drains off.
- Don't have dips made with cream or cream cheese. Choose tomato-based dips, such as salsa, or mix some chopped herbs into low-fat yoghurt.
- Serve rice cakes, oatcakes or plain popcorn with drinks, instead of crisps and salted nuts.
- Drink water instead of sodas or eggnog. You can still have one glass of soda or eggnog at supper, but you should avoid drinking numerous cans of Coke throughout the holidays.
- Try and skip the chocolates and sweets and grab a piece of fruit instead. You can always grab a handful of dried fruit like cranberries.
