MyPlate
MyPlate is the current nutrition guide published by the United States Department of Agriculture, depicting a place setting with a plate and glass divided into five food groups. It represents the recommended proportion of foods from each food group (grains, vegetable, fruit, dairy, protein, and oil) and focuses on the importance of making smart food choices in every food group, every day.
MyPlate is divided into sections of approximately 30 percent grains, 30 percent vegetables, 20 percent fruits and 20 percent protein, accompanied by a smaller circle representing dairy, such as a glass of low-fat/nonfat milk or a yogurt cup. Each of these food groups provides some, but not all, of the nutrients you need.
Nutrition experts believe a plate is a good choice as you can see what my plate should look like at any given meal. The main message should be that half your plate should really be fruits and vegetables. The plate makes it easier for people to understand the importance of eating healthier food and also less of it. Foods in one group cannot replace those in another and no one food group is more important than another. For good health, you need them all along with some form of physical activity.
